DISMEMBER Annihilated Sofia
18 June 2007The serial dose of death metal for this year poured out its power over our heads a few days after the euphoria of Behemoth's concert in Sofia and before the giants' Marilyn Manson and Type O Negative kisk-ass show in Bulgaria. A successful strike (again) for Most of Evil Music has become the invitation of the Swedish metal band Dismember. It was a pity that the row of concerts that were made in the last few months became a precondition for the audience to count not more than 200 visitors per show - all the usual suspects for whom Black Box Club turned into a home place these days. But this is not the only thing that became tradition: Two hours of waiting marked the beginning of the show and the gathered crowd was staying outside the club during this time.
Shortly after 9 p.m. the stage was invaded by the Bulgarians Foeticide, formed more than ten years ago, but not well known to the audience. The style of the band is death metal, played in the spirit of its golden years. We witnessed their great instrumental technique, some smashing grunts and a few songs played in impressive speedy tempo, however sounding too similar to each other.
A few minutes later the instruments were prepared and, accompanied by enthusiastic cries, the second Bulgarian band came on stage - the far more popular brutal guys from Past Redemption. Everything that can be said for their behavior and repertoire is already known by the fans. I will only add that they were great as usual - savage and punchy! The audience started to feel and act as if being in a sauna...
Dismember did a short soundcheck, placed some strange objects on stage, like a plush yellow duck with an inverted cross and a mask with a human face on it, and knocked their first songs in the best way possible. It became immediately clear that the next minutes would be full of the best brutal melodies created by the Swedes. The contact with the audience was more than close, with stagediving fans jumping from the stage and the band seeming happy to see their enthusiasm. The fans did not stop to support the death metal icons that were playing powerfully in front of them, and a sticky moshpit attended each song.
The end of the show was put as fast as it started. The crowd screamed for an encore, and the musicians played two final songs. In the end there was the possibility to meet the emblematic (and fatter) frontman Matti Karki and his colleagues, to chat with them, to take some photos and autographs... and, fortunately, the Swedes showed good temper and affability.
Dismember demonstrated their high class and made this Monday evening a feast of fierce sound.
