MANOWAR Closed Kaliakra Rock Fest with a Three-Hour Performance
30 June 2007Although big names such as Heaven & Hell and Motorhead also participated, no doubt the climax point of the Kaliakra Rock Fest 2007 was the first ever show of the cult heavy metal band Manowar in Bulgaria - a show that will literally become history, having in mind everything what happened during these three hours the "kings of metal" were on stage. Finally thousands of fans from different generations and locations, including neighbour and distant countries, had the chance to see and hear one of the basic bands responsible for their current musical taste from childhood.
First on stage came a band called Sixth Sense, who had to heat up the crowd before the main thing that was to come. However, with their way too long contribution they only managed to provoke fans' anger in form of curses and fingers.
With the setting of the sun another support band came on stage, Holyhell, featuring ex-Manowar drummer Rhino. Whether because of their attractive singing front girl or just because of the classic stale but professional show, they managed to keep the people's attention. Except for songs from their single, they played cover versions of Rhapsody's “Wings of Destiny” and Yngwie Malmsteen's “Rising Force”. Another good surprise was the duet with Eric Adams during their interpretation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's “The Phantom of the Opera”...
The following long gap in time before Manowar came on stage got on people's nerves. Around 11 p.m., after a symphonic intro, the heroes of heavy metal started their blasting show with their self-titled song. In the course of the next 3 hours people managed to hear almost all hymns, mostly from the earlier albums of the band.
What made this show really special were a couple of gestures you won't see many other this big bands make. For sure the happiest fan of the evening was Drago, who came on stage by the band's will and played with them some true heavy metal riffs, supported by a couple of nice girls, also from the crowd. Then he left with Karl Logan's guitar as a gift. Later on, on stage came some of the main people from the local promoter Joker Media’ crew plus the mayor of the village of Kavarna, who got some honorary souvenirs including an autographed guitar. One of the things that made everybody go wild was the performance of the epic Bulgarian national anthem in a heavy metal way, with Eric Adams singing in Bulgarian.
Combined with the really blasting sound, this show was perfect to be taped and released on DVD. Or at least Joey DeMaio promised this to happen in the near future...
