QUEEN + Paul Rodgers Enchanted Belgrade
29 October 2008How should I start? I saw Queen live. This means everything. Yes, not exactly Queen but the reincarnation with Paul Rodgers and Danny Miranda but Brian and Roger were only 4-5 meters away from me. This is neither a partiality, nor a dream come true. This is my reasonable life; this is the quintessence of the music in my microcosms. And yes, I do not like the style of Paul, I miss John but two of the most important musicians gave to the 20 thousand spectators in Belgrade Arena over 2 hours walk in the magic of Queen.
At a concert the condition "+ Paul Rogers" is more tangible. In the setlist of the British besides "All Right Now", there also enter "Seagull" and "Bad Company" which are among the strongest songs, recorded by Paul. And in the middle of a huge crowd the intolerance to his manner of singing is lost in the thousands of screams and the hurricane of emotions that melt the knees, make the vocal chords weak and the eyes hidden behind a wet curtain. Yes, the closing "We Are the Champions" sounded feeble sung by Paul but he stays firmly on his place and bears the role of a frontman with a smile.
But what frontman with Queen? Brian took the leading role many times, flowing his guitar solo into the beautiful musical impression "Bijou" including recording of the voice of Freddie (not only one man wiped his eyes in this moment), then continued with "Lost Horizon". Besides during half an hour, standing at the edge of the corridor of the stage, entering in the audience, Brian and Roger gave us two of the most beautiful songs of the quartet - "Love of My Life" and the folk epic "'39", before the drummer to plunge into insane solo, first including only a snare drum and a cymbal, then the strings of the fretless bass of Danny (and the rhythm of "Under Pressure" and "Another One Bites the Dust"), and subsequently the technicians assembled a full drum kit around him and the solo turned into the emblematic "I'm in Love with My Car". Thunder!
Paul returned on the stage for the ballad "Say It's Not True" and the show again entered in the tracks of some kind of a greatest hits concert. We heard "Bohemian Rhapsody" (again with a recording of Freddie’s voice), "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", “The Show Must Go On"...
Among all the magnificent songs of the band and exhausting adrenaline rush you forget which one of “your” songs you haven’t heard. And under the kindly look of Doctor May and this specific sound of the Red Special you don’t pay attention to the idiots, presenting on a concert of one of the greatest bands only to take photos with the titans on the stage as a background. You sing, jump, clap and cry. And you are grateful for the great organization, the brilliant sound and the given opportunity. After this the memories remain...
