Chuck Berry had to be helped offstage last night (January 1) at a gig in Chicago after collapsing during his set.

The 84 year old, who was performing at Chicago’s Congress Theatre, is said to have slumped over an accompanist’s keyboard an hour into the show. He was then helped offstage for a medical examination, returning 15 minutes later only to be forced off again almost immediately. Berry was then checked by paramedics, who had been called to the scene. He returned to the stage one last time to thank the crowd, but then left the stage and exited the venue.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva said Berry has refused to be taken to hospital, but had felt too weak to continue the show.

Despite his age, Berry continues to perform live regularly and has just completed a full US tour. His management haven’t commented about the incident.
