MTV president details Beavis and Butt-Head revival
18 February 2011Six months ago, word came that 90’s animated icons Beavis and Butt-Head would be returning to MTV.
Now, in an interview with Rolling Stone, MTV president Van Toffler has given the first details on the upcoming series.
Fans should feel like they’re reuniting with old friends when the show premieres sometime this year, as it will hold very true to the original — only the videos your favorite halfwits are watching will be totally modern. Toffler explains the episodes will feature “self-contained segments with the boys in different situations like they used to be. But this time they’ll watch Jersey Shore, UFC matches and user-generated videos from YouTube, in addition to music videos.” Regardless of the origin, all the material will be displayed on the boys’ TV set.
Don’t expect those boys to have changed much either, as there are no plans to age them from when they last appeared almost 14 years ago. “They’ll have the same intelligence,” Toffler continues. “They’re the same boneheads sitting on the same couch, commenting on things through a really simple prism.” Seeing how that prism refracts things like Snookie, Lady Gaga, or David After Dentist might not solve the problem of Music Televisions lack of, well, music, but it’ll still probably be damn amusing.
Be prepared for a massive marketing blitz surrounding the show, as well. Just as Beavis and Butt-Head 2.0 will be brought to the modern era, so will the promotion take full advantage of current technology.
“We’re going to plant seeds of the characters throughout social-media networks like Facebook and Twitter, in addition to traditional programming on television and, potentially, in theaters,” Toffler says. Beavis and Butt-Head Re-do America, anybody?
With creator Mike Judge returning to the show’s reins, there’s potential that even without focusing only on music videos, these two idiots could sort of save MTV. Think The Soup on E!; almost makes all that network’s slop bearable with Joel McHale there to mock it along with us. So, are you excited for this nostalgic return, or would you rather they leave Beavis and Butt-Head in 1997? Let us know in the comments section, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
