HATESPHERE Serpent Eyes and Killer Eyes (2007)
22 May 2007
The major problem with bands like Hatesphere is that the scene they are gravitating around isn't exactly a hotbed of musical innovation.
Much to their possible chagrin, "Serpent Eyes and Killer Eyes", as a good slice of thrash/death you'll hear this year, suffers from comparisons with somewhat thousands of other bands. That's a shame, because it's a good windmilling, circlepit-friendly aggro metal. It's just generic to the bone and so overproduced that you can almost hear how every single riff was slickly polished. And there's this sense of something sick when you hear something so-o-o precisely (and cunningly?) designed. And the song titles give you a taste of infernal death - "Damned Below Judas", "Feeding the Demons", "Drinking with the King of the Dead", etc. Enjoyable, aren't they?
Expect the expectable - supreme musicianship, breakneck pounding pace and punching but tamed power. As already stated, these guys are pretty good from a purely technical standpoint, yet for real innovation look elsewhere.
