DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR Count Me In (2007)
21 June 2007
Bumping into a proper metalcore record these days is much of a surprise; especially if it’s a comparatively new band popping out of the vault. Of course they do sound like Terror and Hetebreed sometimes, but it’s inevitable in 2007, when - let’s face it - Jamey Jasta is running the whole genre. “Count Me In” won’t be termed as undeniable all-time classic, but it will sit very comfortably alongside your record collection of superb hardcore albums (vinyl anybody?).
Let’s put it straight: For a band with just one EP behind them, called unsurprisingly “Friends, Family Forever”, DBD sound like a flawless machine and this is only the debut. If they have any problems, sure it’s not the sound production. Jim Siegel (also produced Dropkick Murphys and Blood for Blood) has been dealing with knobs once again, we have to admit, with supreme accuracy and mastery.
Apart from the sonic excellence, the songs are sometimes grinding and one-dimensional. They are certainly not “unlike anything else being played right now” and that’s what the press release says. To summarize my impression, “Count Me In” is worth buying, but not essential in any way.
