Various Artists Bangers and Thrash (2007)
14 August 2007
Why the 80’s are influencing so much of today’s music is a quite a mystery. What a totally bollocks decade it was! However, then there were bands like Bay Area’s Exodus and Metallica that managed to create something faster, more brutal and violent out of the existing NWOBHM. They called it thrash metal. It went through considerable mutilation over the years and practically ruled the world of metal until the end of the 80’s when the new disease was lurking behind the corner, death metal. But that’s another story, and we’ll need way more space to tell it.
Now, in 2007, thrash metal, we are told, is coming back with all guns blazing with the UK as a leading country. Spawning as many new thrash/crossover bands as maybe only Brazil does, Britain, it seems, is proud to declare that what once was not entirely accomplished is going to be completed now. And if you are interested in what’s going on these days, then “Bangers and Thrash” is exactly for you.
It’s 18 metal thrashin’ mad songs from shit-hot British names like Rager, Nebukadnezza, Mutant, Amok, Gama Bomb and Sekhmet, among the most important. All you have to do is bang your head again, because this new crop of brilliant bands can easily show you they are no worse than the old ones - some of them are even better - and judging by the recognition they get, it would be stupid not to believe them.
Thrash is back and this time it seems it won’t go away so easy!
Let’s finish with the words of Rick Ernst - the director of the highly anticipated documentary “Get Thrashed”:
“It’s great to see guys like yourselves, who weren’t around in 1986 to see all these great bands, actually interested in checking out what was going on back then. That’s another goal - to get the younger generation excited about that scene, and think, “Maybe we could do something like that!””
