THREE The End Has Begun (2007)
17 August 2007
Attempting at dissecting and demystifying Three as people and musicians frequently results in confusion or pompous misconception. Yes, this is a complicated band, and all who already own their 2005 “Wake Pig” album will agree.
Experimental and avant-garde, Three seem to be a perfect bridge between emo and classic 70’s prog rock. While in the previous effort similarities with the mother band Coheed and Cambria were inevitable, “The End Has Begun” is so smartly written and performed that it would be inadequate to continue with such comparisons. Three are a band of their own and there are more people who understand, appreciate and accept what they are trying to do.
This music is not about giving answers and absolutes. You’re not supposed to look for obvious affirmations. Instead it poses questions, provokes thought and ratifies inquisition. This fact alone can make them worthy of your attention, because it makes them more interesting than 99% of the dumped down bands who play theatrical roles for the media and create music that is soon to be forgotten on the music shop discount shelves.
Three are free as a band to follow any musical experiment they choose, uninhabited by the burden of futile expectations. It seems they can create whatever they want and this is exactly what the word “progressive” means in the term progressive rock. If you like your mind to be challenged, go ahead and buy this album. Who knows, maybe it will match your mind perfectly.
