When an album you just bought opens with immortal words like “Bring out your dead / Bring me their heads / An execution is at hand,” you must be kidding yourself stupid if you still wonder what to expect. Plus, before hearing it, you already saw the artwork of Paul Romano (working also for A Life Once Lost, Mastodon and some others of today’s heroes). Plus, you read the name of the band, right? No excuses then, please. With Through the Eyes of the Dead and their new album “Malice” you get exactly what you have paid for - some teeth-pulling, ass-spreading, brain-damaging deathcore with crunching guitars, fast double bass drums and grunting all over. Mixed and produced by Eric Rutan, credited also for Morbid Angel and Hate Eternal relases, “Malice” lives up to its title. Be it the long-awaited death metal revival or just a very strong collection of 11 tracks that smash everything on their way, who really gives a fuck when bands like this are around? Names like Suffocation (lots of influences from them here) hardly ring a bell for the youngsters who attend The Black Dahlia Murder shows, but the situation seems to be finally solved, and cadaverous tunes like “As Good As Dead” and “Pull the Trigger” will bring back the love for death metal. Of course, it doesn’t sound exactly like in the old times, but then, who does? You don’t need a time machine if you like to keep staying stuck in the past, dude. Just do not go out from your flat, that’s all. For all the others, TtEotD is a challenge to understand, perceive and value the current state of your favorite genre. There are certain things that could make this album better and even more stirring, but it’s a question of time and sustainability of intentions, I suppose.
