W.A.S.P. Babylon (2009)
24 September 2009
The new W.A.S.P. material won't cause you any problems. This conclusion was drawn out of one week of listening to 'Babylon', the whole lot, not the samples they distributed all over internet. No, it's a good old promo CD, housed in a cardboard sleeve, played strictly three times a day. Back to the conclusions now. On the one hand it's great, because it seems no one wants to have any problems with gigantic and pretenstious concept albums anymore.
Quite the contrary, Babylon is a straightforward release. On the other hand, despite the emotional songs like 'Babyon's Burning' and 'Thunder Red', the 'Wild Child' resemlance on the beginning of the opening 'Crazy' makes you feel disappointed. While in the last album it seemed W.A.S.P. were stepping on the new level of their career, now Blackie uses some old tricks again. In these terms Deep Purple's 'Burn' would be way more appropriate as a B side and the generic rock'n'roll in the end would have not happened at all.
In an ideal world 'Babylon' would have been an EP, an Extended Play. Strangely Live To Die Another Day only destroys the balance between the opening track and the thrid one. 'Into The Fire' s chorus reminds me of Michael Jackson's 'Give In To Me'.
Of course, if we leave all these details aside, one will find out that the new album has a few qualities. First of all, Blackie sings incredibly and the sound is just perfect. The band despite being their boss's pawns, are a very worked-out team. At the end 'Babylon' is way above many of W.A.S.P. 90's releases and even sounds a bit like 'Headless Children', but could have been a lit better if his creator would have thrown the trash away from it.
