SLASH Slash (2010)
20 April 2010
For some questions there is simply no fence to sit on- questions like: Is there a God? Is it wrong to become aroused by TV weather presenters? And more to the point, is it possible Slash to go wrong?
Had the mysterious ex-G’n’R and present Velvet revolver guitar player disappeared in the shadow of his counterpart Axl Rose through the years, that wouldn’t be an unprecedented dilemma. But there’s talent, business mind and brains under the hat and behind the mirror glasses that turn Slash’s debut album (Snakepit doesn’t count because it was a band) into one of the strongest rock releases recently. What’s more, because of its greatness, we even dare to doubt the quality of Axl performances.
Why we are talking about vocalists? Because вЂSlash’ is a CD in the vein of Dave Grohl’s Probot. Each song features different voice. The opener, вЂGhost’ is sung by Ian Astbury of The Cult, the next one, the melancholic вЂCrucify The Dead’- by Ozzy and the we have songs performed by Chris Cornell (вЂPromise’), Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas (вЂBeautiful Dangerous’) and even Iggy Pop (вЂWe’re All Gonna Die’).
Of course, there people who don’t like such projects. Their point is clear: such album is only a collection of songs performed by different singers and should not be called an album at all. That’s true, but only in theory, because in practice thanks to the unique guitar style of its creator, вЂSlash’ sounds as a homogeneous album. It stands along with every single voice, note or curve as to remind every one whose exactly rock’n’roll is being made at the moment. And if you don’t believe us, please check out what happens in вЂI Hold On’ after 2:31 up until 3:19.
This way what we get is a excellent mix of different feelings- from southern rock (one more time вЂI Hold On’ with Kid Rock) through the instrumental demonstration a la G’n’R with Duff Mckagan and Dave Grohl to the fast metal of вЂNothing To Say’ with M.Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold.
The most personal and in the same time quite a public love confession to the rock’n’roll lifestyle comes with the voice of Lemmy in вЂDoctor Alibi’.
All in all we do not doubt that anything or anyone in the world of classic rock will have the balls to walk the way of this monstrous album. Not this year.
