FOO FIGHTERS Wasting Light (2011)
07 April 2011
When Dave Grohl decides to hire the producer of вЂNevermind’, Butch Vig, has guests like Krist Novoselic and Bob Mould (We love you, Bob!) and put all lead guitar responsibilities in the hands of Pat Smear, who once played for Nirvana, you don’t need to be Einstein to figure it out. But wait a minute. Stop salivating! Don’t start the Nirvana mantra. Not yet. Foo Fighters’ seventh studio album is rooted in the 90’s, that’s right, but it’s also a lot more than the sum of its parts.
вЂBridge Burning’ is the perfect opener. Sooner or later it will become one of your favourites and you will like it more than the single вЂRope’ and the funny video with Lemmy called вЂWhite Limo’. In вЂDear Rosemary’ it becomes clear that вЂWasting Light’ is a not just your ordinary album. It’s crowded with good songs in the beginning. Nobody does things like that if he doesn’t have enough great songs and that’s a law, you know?
вЂThese Days’ is another soon-to-be-a hit-single. It’s radio friendly and smooth. If you are focused, you will discern certain grunge subtleties here and there, mostly influences from Screaming Trees and Alice In Chains. These two names should wake even the most lethargic old farts of the 90’s. Yes, I am aware of the purists who consider Foo Fighters too distant from their ideals and too commercial to be grunge.
Well, to be honest, I don’t think so, dude.
It’s a great album, especially comparing to the last one. It won’t make it to a classic though. It’s heavy and loud and if you play it properly, it will blow your brains out.
As I said, don’t expect any Nirvana here. Even if there was a Seattle revival it wouldn’t make you younger, so let this album blast off the speakers and meet your mid-life crisis with some dignity.
