BLOOD STAIN CHILD Mozaiq (2007)
23 August 2007
What have I come to - to read there is a genre called “Nintendo metal”! Associative I connected it with the speedy shredding of the crackbrains from Dragonforce, but it turned out it was a different type of music.
Blood Stain Child were one of the first bands which made musical experiments in that direction with their 2005album, combining their melodic death metal music with electronic sounds which sounded like the peeping of an electronic game. It is not accidental that the genre’s title is “Nintendo”, but the chosen sounds in the music of these Japanese are far more complex than the standard short tones we hear from the screen. Contrary to their above mentioned power metal colleagues, Blood Stain Child do not force their guitars to make them sound like the fastest band in the world, but are mixing their tense death metal with previously prepared electronic melodies.
“Mozaiq” is one of the best examples of the abilities of these innovations in metal. It is also one of the most successful melodic metal albums I have heard from a long time. The original way in composing puts extra charm in these hard riffs. The other different thing in Blood Stain Child is the using of two vocalists, the main singing being scarier and telling the words fast and furious, and the supporting role being given to the calmer back vocals.
In “Mozaiq” there are plenty of such kinds of melodies, there are entirely electronic songs, female vocals help a few times, and the whole concept is rounded by “links” to the earlier efforts of In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.
I did not expect that such kind of a combination would be OK for me, but this album definitely tickled my fancy to search for other similar bands. Is this the music of the future? It grabs fast, it has a potential to become more interesting... Yes, why not, actually!
