DARKWATER Calling the Earth to Witness (2007)
27 August 2007
Without having any previous recordings, Darkwater finally released their first album. Four of the musicians are also gathered in another band, Harmony, but if we judge from their activity (only one album from 2003), it is more like a past contract and these guys, in a far more different combo, are now playing progressive metal under a different name.
For everyone familiar with the style, it is clear that it is not sufficient to have only good musical skills and a long service on stage in order to be among the biggest and beloved names in the genre. You have to be the best in everything you do, make good experiments and not forget who you are and where you’re coming from. These and many other qualities are needed for every debutante who is diving into the progressive jungle...
The best in Darkwater is that they show a wish to have their own face, representing a refined but not complicated reading of the genre. At the same time, in “Calling the Earth to Witness” - without standing in each other’s way - original instrumental experiments and some tranquil hard rock compositions live together. Right in the middle of the album there is a place for a song, “The Play”, separated in two parts, which gives time for some fresh air with its really gorgeous dulcet singing and the ethereal piano sound, which has the main role in leading the listeners into a melancholic and scatter-brained mood.
As a minus of the album I can mention only some similarities of the music in it to things already heard, as well as the much too long playing time of the disc.
I have a certain hope that Darkwater will make more high-grade material. It will be great if their destiny is not the same as the one of their side-projects, because the scene is only losing from such inactivity.
