ARCH ENEMY Rise of the Tyrant (2007)
20 September 2007
As if this album came faster than expected. Two years are not a short time, but with the active and stable attendance on the stages all over the world, Arch Enemy filled up every minute with great music.
After releasing “Doomsday Machine” there were conflicting opinions. The situation now is almost the same, because the band continues its development in the direction taken with the previous record, but made in a quite different shape. After getting to the heart of the new songs, the messages become clearer and the music sounds familiar. The brothers Amott are again the main branch on which the face of the band is built. The things they’ve created are amazing as always. Musicians from such a high class - not only the guitarists, but also the other members - can not score a poor result despite the criticism they received.
Angela Gossow also succeeds in making the typical scary sound better and she carries the things off with a flourish. However, for her job in “Rise of the Tyrant” a discussion can be easily started, because there are some hesitations whether she is using voice effects. One thing is clear - she does not sound naturally in most of the songs.
Arch Enemy run the risk by releasing every new record with changes that provoke the audience, which is used to a previous image. In the new songs there is the aggression needed, the brilliant technique, and the melodic parts, too, but “Rise of the Tyrant” is still a bit chaotic and confusing. Its rating can be put on one or another extreme, that’s why it is recommended for the fans to stay somewhere in the middle to make an assessment of the bad moments, but also to hear the great melodies in this attempt of the Swedes. It is not by accident that there are sirens in the beginning of the CD, warning us that something wicked may come…
