OPETH The Roundhouse Tapes (2007)

When Opeth release a new record, this is always a great event. “The Roundhouse Tapes” is the next curtsy from the band to their fans - a phenomenal concert performance which catches the musicians in one of their peak moments from the Ghost Reveries Tour in the legendary area of London’s The Roundhouse. These two discs are niftily and refinely presented as much as Opeth showed that they deserve to be through the years. They are different than the previous DVD, released in 2003, because they represent not that much a combination from the best of the band (of course, we can argue about this), but a compilation of emblematic songs from all the periods in Opeth’s development from their beginning to the successful 2005 album “Ghost Reveries”. At first sight, the choice “The Roundhouse Tapes” to be on two discs, after the tracklist includes only nine songs, looks strange, but when you see their names, everything becomes clear. In spite of their small count, the songs have a total playing time of more than an hour and a half, during which they break every doubt for their selection. Here are “Ghost of Perdition” and “Under the Weeping Moon”, “Face of Melinda” and “Blackwater Park”... And although everything happened a year ago, the professional playing and the emotionality of the music still excite a lot. The chosen audio format does not allow us to feel the complete atmosphere in the concert hall, but the boys from Opeth and the chosen label for this release, Peaceville Records, assure us that in the beginning of 2008 “The Roundhouse Tapes” will come out on DVD with bonus material, videos, backstage footage and every other kind of great stuff for the fans. After this inspiring journey through the band’s discography, the explanations about the importance of Opeth become unduly, because their music should be the strongest argument for you to hear their albums, be it live or studio releases.
