ATROCITY Werk 80 II (2008)
24 April 2008
Atrocity release their second album with covers - beginning that it is really risky. In general, issuing such CDs is absolutely senseless and when they become more than one in your discography, it is harder for your fans to accept this fact quietly.
Once again, the songs used for the covers are well known from the 80’s. The ones made in a new way are sometimes better than expected, but as a whole, the changes are cosmetic.
The idea of remaking songs in such way is not bad at all, but when you put them in one album, it is obviously far too much. Napalm Records did their best to earn maximum money from the situation and released “Werk 80 II” in a special version on two discs. There are all the covers that Atrocity did through the years on them, with a bunch of bonuses included. How great!
In the album there are hits by Depeche Mode, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Eurythmics, Alphaville and eight other bands. Purposefully it was searched for the most popular compositions of these groups to play a game with the fans’ nostalgia. However, I doubt that the present adorers of Atrocity ever liked these musicians, so on one hand it’s good for them to have the opportunity to hear these tunes in a new version. On the other hand, however, covers will be covers and they, even if it is hard for someone to accept it, rarely have good ideas and a big amount of creative work put in them.
Four years have passed since the last full length album of Atrocity emerged. For this time a compilation of forgotten hits with doubtful quality can not be enough for the exacting audience.
