Amon Amarth are already allegory of the viking metal and although their present work is in its stereotypes, their fans are stronger and more than ever. Their last CD proves my theory that the band and its managers in particular stake more on the commercial campaigns, than at the expense of the better quality of the music and the progress of the chosen genre. “Twilight of the Thunder God” is not a logical continuation of “With Oden On Our Side”, but more as a bonus of it. The ideas and the mood are well-known quite a while ago from the same musicians and although I didn’t expect something completely different, I was surprised badly. The most catchy song here is the self-titled – it has a great video which helped me to clear my first impression that Amon Amarth do not hurry for somewhere… except to the easier way for getting greater sales. In the other songs there is nothing new and if this wasn’t strange for me a few years ago, now, when such compilations are released every day, I’m sure that the strategy of the Swedes needs a change. I think that it is proper to describe how these unvaried compositions sound like. We talk about viking metal with many melodic death influences, so – powerful guitar sound, smashing heavy drums, deep scream, rising straight from the depths of Johan Hegg’s chest and all of this repeated with a few changes in the framework of some minutes. It is true, in the new record we have guest appearances – from Apocalyptica and musicians from Children of Bodom and Entombed, but they also do not succeed to emerge. I wonder why was this disc released now – after the high lath, lifted from its predecessor, more time was needed, if we wanted a better inheritor. It may sound a bit extremely but at this point I don’t see a good future for the group. They will probably be famous for long time and will be liked for their brutal stage behavior and the synchronous rotation of their bellies, beards and hairs, but if they do not want to ruin their name, they should bring new ideas and construct a different conception.
