ANOTHER ANIMAL Another Animal (2007)
30 November 2007
There was some slightly notable lack in the American rock scene since Whitfield Crane got lost during the last few years. However, a short conversation with his former colleague in Ugly Kid Joe, Shannon Larkin, managed to convince him to reincarnate in “another animal”.
Shannon is the drummer for Godsmack for the last 5 years, he has played with the cult neo-metallers Snot, as well as with some other known and unknown guys. When during the recording sessions of his current band a huge part of the material remained unused, alongside the other two of Godsmack (only without singer Sully Erna), Shannon decided to release the songs with a new project. He remembered Whit Crane and after a while the four members entered studio, recording the debut album for Another Animal.
The 12 songs do not shine with that original ideas, nor are the best material that the involved musicians have recorded. It is modern alternative metal/rock that is above the average level, but doesn’t shine with anything special. We are in for some cliché interpretations of various themes, fading identity with unclear style, rambling between the likes of Godsmack, Velvet Revolver or Puddle of Mudd, but there is also this pleasant feeling of a meeting with old friends.
Songs like the grungy “Broken Again” or the heavy bluesy “Black Coffee Blues” raise the standard and give another good reason - besides the star crew - “Another Animal” to be heard. And we do not know whether we will have the opportunity to hear the voice of Whitfield Crain again... Yes, in the balladic finale of the album he promises, “I won’t fade away,” but I have the unpleasant feeling that this CD will remain an only edition, born in a transient meeting of good musicians on the crossroad of rock’n’roll…
