EDDIE VEDDER Into the Wild (2007)
15 January 2008
“There’s a big, a big hard sun…” You have probably heard more than once the amazing cover of “Hard Sun” by the Canadian singer and songwriter Indio that Eddie Vedder made last year. The song could easily represent the whole soundtrack to the anchoretic road-trip movie by Sean Penn “Into the Wild”.
The director and writer contacts personally with Eddie, asking him to record the songs for the movie that he is then making, based on the book by Jon Krakauer about the real life of Christopher McCandless. At the beginning of the 90’s this youngster gives away all his savings for charity, collects some luggage, burns the money in his wallet and goes hitch-hiking, bored and soured by the modern society (“Far Behind”, “Society”). After different adventures he reaches the depths of the Canadian woods and starts living in an abandoned bus at a glade (see the cover), and the music accompanying the tragedy of his life couldn’t be more appropriate…
Eddie sings and plays a beautiful musical bouquet that has collected the scent of the classic folk rock from the 60’s. The minor sound of the entirely acoustic record and the hypnotic voice of Vedder influence strongly and tell you the story of the movie without even watching it, recreating in a moving manner the whole melancholic atmosphere of the liberating search of the human roots, harmony and personal freedom. Simple but direct and touching, decorated with discrete musical garments, the compositions in the album take the listener to a trip, gazing at the horizon that has devoured the road, drenched in the last rays of the fading sun.
“Wind in my hair I feel part of everywhere / Underneath my being is a road that disappeared”, sings Eddie in the final song “Guaranteed” (that won him a “Golden Globe”), and there is nothing more to be added except to play again the wonderful soundtrack and set out on the road.
