MONSTER MAGNET Mastermind (2010)

Low-tuned guitars pour from out of space, enter with roar in the stratosphere and punch you straight in the abdomen. Epic, cynics and rockandroll are stirred in amalgam of catchy riffs and melodies that dig in your mind to stay until you pull them out singing along with Wyndrof. Who? Yes, the space cowboy has returned. As big as a comet and louder than it when hitting the Earth. Ladies and daughters, run to the bunkers Monster Magnet are back! There is much more doom, epos and scope than ever in “Mastermind”. The thunder of the slow and heavy “Hallucination Bomb” still echoes, throwing debris around when the pulsating “Bored With Sorcery” rushes upon you for a wild ride in “(a)steroid Monster Magnet” style. You don’t have time to get back on your feet because there erupts the mighty “Dig That Hole” – a song which I am sure would sound grandiosity live. And the single “Gods and Punks” starts almost carelessly with a discreetly crawling tickle of the guitar to explode in its epic chorus and to enter directly among the favorite songs of the five from New Jersey but not before blowing your head first. Dave has quitted the drugs. He has gained weight. And his voice is titanic! The whole album is weaved mainly by his screams and the blowing guitar blizzards of Ed Mundell and Phil Caivano that add such a sublime touch to the songs that it is possible the first listening to scare you. The situation remains the same until the end – mid-tempo explosions, filling the ether up and straight space-rock axes, so typical for Monster Magnet. With a heavy dose of riffs and screams, “Mastermind” bears a whole bag of guitar heroism while Dave yells, sings, moans and shouts impulsively all the time which nears the record to the raw and genuine sound of a live performance. Long story short – Monster Magnet are raising the horns again and our whole sect is in furor. Because we love this band. Rockandroll!
