THE HIDDEN HAND The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote (2007)
04 July 2007
They call Ozzy “The Prince of Darkness”. Well, let me introduce you to “The Godfather of Doom”. Shame on you if you’ve never heard of the 1960-born Scott "Wino" Weinrich, especially if you think of yourself as a fan of "the music that connects us". However, even you haven't met his name, at least you should’ve heard of some of the bands he was part of in the past. And it's not just some bands, when we're talking about doom. Except for his participation in lots of cult underground projects like Goatsnake, The Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight, Sixty Watt Shaman, Paul Chain, Solace, fame brought him also his main occupations - The Obsessed, Place of Skulls (featuing Victor Griffin of Pentagram), Spirit Caravan and the ultimate doomsters Saint Vitus. And if you have ever wondered who's the third man in the video for “Shake Your Blood” from Dave Grohl’s famous Probot project (besides Lemmy and the 66 freaky girls from SuicideGirls.com) - you know now!
Was it apathy or desperation, but Wino was on the way of ending his career as a musician. That’s stunning when talking about one of the legends in the underground for the past 20 years... Classic master and leader in the genre, today he's doing what he knows best. Or at least as good as in the stoner age of Spirit Caravan...
Being able to track this reincarnation from the very beginning till the release of this third album by The Hidden Hand, the thing that impressed me the most were the peeled ancient blues roots. But while those invisible roots are deep in the whiskey-soaked ground, there's a monolithic trunk of heavy and solid doom, with a crown and the tortilla branches of psychedelic experiments and progressive musicianship.
Exactly that naturally dramatic “The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote” sounds - one not that much of a concept album, but more of a collection of single episodes, parts of a larger story. The story of a devised character named Whiskey Foote, who lived in the earliest years of modern American history and died heroically for freedom in a battle with the colonizers. His lost face, representing the essence of American freedom, is conquering again the collective consciousness before the tyranny of today's world. In other words, The Hidden Hand didn't really leave the politic lyrics in exchange of historical ones, as many thought...
