EARTH Hibernaculum (2007)
07 July 2007
Earth is a name that maniacs know for sure - maybe not because they are among the pioneers of minimalistic drone/doom together with The Melvins, but more likely because of the band’s leader, Dylan Carlson, who's also the only constant member through all the years from 1990 until now.
What makes Dylan Carlson such an interesting person is the fact that he was the best friend of one of the last tragically early deceased (when it still was popular to do so...) rock’n’roll idols, Kurt Cobain. Something more - Dylan is the guy who bought the gun that the legendary frontman of Nirvana used to commit suicide...
Earth’s album titles aren't less fussy and strange than the music behind. “Hibernaculum” is the sixth full-length CD in the otherwise not short discography of the avantgarde-experimental innovators, and three of four of the songs on it are actually old ones, re-recorded in the new, more “western” style, which the band brought with its previous release, “Hex”. In 35 minutes “Hibernaculum” hardens the new drone sound, now drawing not that much of dark and oppressive images in the listener's imagination, but more likely such of a mystical and ghostly town in the middle of the hazy desert, where time has stopped long ago...
