SUNN0))) Oracle (2007)
31 August 2007
Among the most untraditional faces of doom (and music at all) shines one way of playing known as drone, familiar with its avantgarde performers. This duo, named after the famous Sunn0))) amplifiers, gathered exclusive popularity not just among metal fans and stoned mind explorers, but also in art surroundings.
The names of Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley are hard to follow in the credits of all those releases of dozens of bands all over the world. They just got some kudos with their collaboration with Japanese experimentators Boris (Altar) and the participation in the Roadburn Festival, and here they are now, striking again with another album for Southern Lord.
This time the concept is more than surprising - “Oracle” was recorded as a soundtrack to an exhibition of New York city sculptor Banks Violette. The show represents the equipment of Sunn0))), but as sculptors...
Musically, we have the same well-known formula of complete lack of any rhythm, melody or harmony, with the accent on the tone quality, as we know it from previous releases. Beside the ordinary guitar noises, drawing typical depressive and oppressive apocalyptic and dark images, this time they use Atsuo Mizuno's cymbals (Boris), Atila Csihar's groaning in old hungarian (Mayhem), and Joe Preston's jackhammer (Earth, Melvins, Thrones).
There's one more interesting detail about the recording of the first of the two songs in the limited vinyl edition, that actually people already know from the Buddha Machine Compilation. This Buddha Machine is a small transistor radio containing electric loop samples, which Sunn0))) use to play through their amps and see what happens... The result is an absolutely hypnotic and diabolic imposing soundscapes, suitable for the soundtrack of an avantgarde sculptor’s exhibition.
The CD version of “Oracle” contains one more composition, “Helio)))Sophist”, including parts of live performances - the place to actually feel and not just hear the real charm of Sunn0))).
