MANU CHAO La Radiolina (2007)
21 September 2007
Let summer madness continue, because the man with the unmistakable voice has a new dose of social and political propaganda messages in his fourth long playing album, “La Radiolina”!
As expected, there aren't any big changes in the creative process - the mix of cultures from the four directions of the world is absolutely enough though. In 21 songs, most of them being less than 2 minutes long, there is again this multilingual variety, including English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Manu Chao has always been topical in the themes his "quiet" revolution is taking on. Of course, except for the obligatory message to the president of the USA, one more theme has found its place in his music - the inspiration of love. Although a large part of the motifs are the same in different songs, the album is fulfilling its purpose - to make you feel good, just like every radio's purpose is, which is actually the meaning of the album's title…
The diminutive form is in fact fitting well for the works of its idealistic author. In the mix of ska, reggae, flamenco and rock there isn't really any virtuosity, but what you may like is the pure emotion and the catchy sunny melodies. And the naive sounding Latino voice as well. Another thing you won't find is a smash hit, at least not like those on the 1998 debut album “Clandestino”, which sent this loony poet on top of the world music charts and in those of all ganja smoking lovers of the green, yellow and red around the world...
