IN THIS MOMENT A Beautiful Tragedy (2007)
10 May 2007
The debut album by the young Californian band In This Moment should be a real pleasure for fans of female-vocals-dominated metal. Maria Brink shows a wide range of voice and genre abilities that vary form soft ballad tones to high-pitched hardcore screams. In terms of music, the band members have not spared ideas, too. The songs are rich in sound, somewhat consecutive, gradating into the next notion.
As a whole, the album is varied, mixing gentleness and rawness. Рўhe intense effect comes from the contrast or, respectively, the unison of the music and the firm vocals of Maria - at times gentle, at times raw, as you may guess... The cleanness of the voice makes an especially great impression in the thrilling ballad "The Legacy of Odio" and the acoustic piece "When the Storm Subsides".
Another quite pleasant fact is the use of a lot more quiet, shadowy introductions, followed by "surprising" rush into the songs. The results are pretty good, but let's hope it won't be a tendency for the band's next albums, because we know how quickly these kinds of things become cliche...
No matter how we rate "A Beautiful Tragedy", the biggest acknowledgement for these five young musicians is the fact that just a few days after the official release of their debut album they were invited to perform on the Second stage at this year's edition of the Ozzfest. In This Moment will play alongside Hatebreed, Kittie, Walls of Jericho, Nile, 3 Inshes of Blood and other bands. I'd say it's a great outset for a promising new band!
