Bon Jovi’s “Lost Highway” has nothing in common with David Lynch’s same-title psycho asylum. It’s enough just to take a look at the cheery summer picture with a free highway ahead and road marking for permitted overtaking to get an idea about the album’s vibe. The mostly non-committing songs offer melodic rock, be it sentimental or accompanied with some pulled wires here and there. The whole bouquet of strings is abundantly poured with acoustic guitars and clear melodic sounds like those longish bluesy twists. Among the album’s themes are the summer, parties, wine, traveling, love and hope. Bon Jovi once again sing about “these days”, the nostalgia for the past and the good that awaits us in the future. Here are we get also ballads that are surely to be expected, like the first single “Let’s Make a Memory” and “Seat Next to You”. As a whole, the songs remind of the culmination in an American movie, just before the happy end comes. Well, this whole thing goes fit perfectly with a nice long traveling to somewhere, like the one from the cover, let’s say. Jon Bon Jovi’s emblematic vocal blend is in its whole presence, and at least in this aspect the band’s tenth studio album lacks nothing. And what does it lack, you’ll ask? Well, maybe something new, fresh or catchier, like 2000’s “It’s My Life”, nevertheless the vigorous “We Got It Going On” that tries to achieve that. But let’s not look for a calf under the ox - it’s summertime and during summer holidays it’s fun to blow this album to the maximum in your car. And why not tap along the rhythm of some of the country sounding moments - the serene “I Love This Town” for example - being kind of continuation to “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” from the previous album “Have a Nice Day”. The duet with country singer Leann Rimes in “Stranger” will sound-screen more than one sentimental story from this world’s life - remember “Coyote Ugly”, in which Leann Rimes also takes part... Well, “Everything’s Broken” is not so cheery, but it’s suitable for traveling, too. What if the weather is bad? “It’s OK”, Bon Jovi calm us down and assure that this is the right time and place we should be.
