CAVALERA CONSPIRACY Inflikted (2008)

The fact that Max and Igor Cavalera are playing together again is an interesting twist in the Latino-American soap opera that the members of the great Sepultura have been performing for metal fans since 1996. Accordingly to the genre’s traditions, instead of bringing things to the end that the viewers desire (Max, Igor, Andreas Kisser and Paulo Jr. playing together again that is), the Brazilians made it so that there would be countless episodes more. And this shouldn’t be viewed as a particularly bad thing. This year, instead of one, fans will get 4 “Sepultura albums” - Cavalera Conspiracy’s debut, Andreas Kisser’s solo one, a new Soulfly and a new Sepultura with Derick Green. Talk about quantity! But what about quality? As far as we have “Inflikted” in mind, it is present and people should be pleased. The Cavalera brothers and their co-conspirators come upon us with the fast upbeat opener that is the title track - it’s in the spirit of old Sepultura, but with a more modern vibe like Soulfly. They never let go of the tempo or slow down until the album’s end. And all of us who have been listening to metal not since yesterday know what Max and Igor are capable of. Marc Rizzo once again proves that he is Max’s greatest discovery, as he totally shreds on guitars throughout the CD. And then comes Joe Duplantier of Gojira and fills in the gaps in the music with his massive bass playing. And all of that is packed with a really clean sound made by the ex-Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader. Badass, eh? The bad thing is that this is basically “Soulfly with Igor and the dude from Gojira”. Even the lyrics are as lame as Soulfly’s. And if someone had expected something more from this reunion, they’ll remain displeased at least until the brothers reunite with Andreas. Which is probably 150 episodes away. Enjoy watching the soap opera until then!
