THEM CROOKED VULTURES Them Crooked Vultures (2009)
17 November 2009
I can hardly think of another band able to generate 135 listens at last.fm a week before its debut hits the shelves. For some that would be a scary indication for the level of internet piracy these days while for others it would indicate something much more important. People have been expecting The Crooked Vultures as the Second rocknroll coming knowing damn well the Paul Jones-Homme-Grohl combination would be a musical tornado, no less.
Do not compare this debut to Nirvana or Probot but feel free to find the heavy Led Zeppelin influences as well as the trademark Queens of the Stone Age sound that seems to be prevailing the record.
But, no, this is no boring affair and, no, you haven’t listened to this album before. Them Crooked Vultures stand as a full-blooded rocknroll machine, their musical guns blazing. And they know damn well what they’re doing – even though this might be their first tracks together.
There is a coherence in this album, be it the smart song titles Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up' or вЂNo One Loves Me & Neither Do I’, the ironic lyrics, the heavy on Led Zepplin riffs вЂElephants’, the mesmerizingly psychedelic вЂInterlude with Ludes’ and the almost prog feel of вЂCaligulove’. Fans and critics are to judge over Them Crooked Vultures for the next decade but as for now – this album is more fun than a tequila sunrise in sunny LA.
