THE PRODIGY Invaders Must Die (2009)
05 March 2009
It's been five years since the PRODIGY's last studio effort, 2004's 'Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned' - an album which went to No1 in the UK charts, but was nowhere near as universally acclaimed as 1997's peak-form 'The Fat Of The Land'.
This time round Liam Howlett's got Keith Flint and Maxim back and the band have gone back in time to their roots for inspiration. This is what Howlett promised and this is what we get - the raw beats, the thunder, the rock, the punk, even some of the manic hysteria of old. This becomes apparent within the first few songs of the album. The title track is explosive enough, although it also feels a bit forced.
'Omen', the current single is on fire and will not leave many unimpressed. The middle section of the record is sort of where it peaks, with the relentless beat-o-rama of 'Take Me To The Hospital', 'Warrior Dance' and 'Run With The Wolves', which features some gloriously manic drumming from none other than Dave Grohl.
The more synth-laden 'Omen' reprise is also worth tapping your feet to, but from then on the rest of 'Invaders Must Die' is a bit of an anticlimax. Not that it's bad, but there's nothing too exciting or inventive going on until the end.
Overall the PRODIGY have made a solid and at times incendiary and exciting album, although the quality is not sustained throughout the entire duration which may come as a disappointment to some, but rest assured that in a live environment, the band will, as always, rip and tear it up.
