Jimi Hendrix’s sister insists producers of the biopic under production can’t complete it without her permission – and she’s not going to give it.

Last week the the Irish Film & Television Network reported pre-production was underway in Ireland for a movie called All is By My Side, set to star Outkast rapper Andre 3000 in the title role.

It’s set in England in 1966 and tells the story behind the recording of Hendrix’s debut album Are You Experienced.

But Janie, boss of Experience Hendrix LLC, states her firm hasn’t approved any such project.

In a statement she says: “Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature-length biographical film is nearing production.

Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix, and administrator of the music and publishing catalogue, has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.

The board have not ruled out a ‘biopic’ in the future, although producing partners would, out of necessity, have to involve the company from the inception of any such project if it is to include Jimi Hendrix music or compositions.”

Her position suggests that, if writer and director John Ridley’s film is to go ahead, it won’t feature any Hendrix music.

A TV movie released in 2000 starring The Wire actor Wood Harris got round the problem by using new recordings of material Hendrix covered.
