What we’ve got here is a double album instead of the pair of separate albums we’ve been promised by the band last summer. I guess making one double album instead of two separate is more feasible financially but that really doesn’t matter much as long as the concept of the project is intact.

And it is.

BIFFY CLYRO are masters of light-footed but sharp-elbowed songwriting. Glasgow rockers grow up gracefully. They are old beyond their years, so to say and ultimately unfashionable in terms of doing things. I mean who the heck is doing double studio albums these days?

I remember the time, like 13 years ago when nobody paid attention to these guys but their perseverance has paid off, for “Opposites” is their best, eh, album to date- strident and raucous, melodic and reflective.

Actually we are talking two albums here, two opposite albums- musically and lyrically. While one of them is optimistic the other is dark and desperate sounding. Each song in the first one has its opposite in the other. Simple and effective plus you can listen to it the way it is or you can switch from opposite to opposite.
For those who meet Biffy for the first time, it’s indie rock, pop rock, alternative rock or whatever-you-call-it-rock. If you are not into syncopated verses, sing along choruses and melodies, this will give you headaches.

Otherwise you will find these 20 tracks immensely infectious, as this is one of those no filler albums but in the same time it’s quite long and who has the time to listen to such long opuses from start to end these days? This is the only negative aspect of otherwise a real modern masterpiece of rock music.
