The Beatles’ ‘Sgt Pepper’ has been voted the greatest album of all time by Radio 2.

The 1967 album beat Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ to the top spot in the poll of 100 albums.

The massive survey polled an impressive 220,000 listeners to the station, with a full run-down of the chart coming from DJ Simon Mayo at the weekend.

Others that charted high were U2’s ‘Joshua Tree’ at three, ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac at four and The Beatles' ‘Revolver’ at six.

Unsurprisingly considering listeners to the station, contemporary acts were largely given the cold shoulder in the poll.

Here is the top 10 according to the Radio 2' listeners:

1 Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles

2 Thriller - Michael Jackson

3 The Joshua Tree - U2

4 Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

5 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

6 Revolver - Beatles

7 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon / Garfunkel

8 Abbey Road - Beatles

9 A Night At The Opera - Queen

10 The Beatles (The White Album) - Beatles
