THE GOO GOO DOLLS have dismissed drummer Mike Malinin after 19 years behind the kit, both parties have confirmed.

And the sticksman’s first act as a free agent was to invite estranged Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora to start a band with him.

Malinin had been sitting out the band’s current US tour while attending to a family matter, thought to be his wife’s pregnancy. He’d been replaced by Lifehouse sticksman Rick Woolstenhulme Jr, with Malinin telling fans: “He’s really rockin’ it.”

And he insists he has no hard feelings against his former colleagues, even though the move seemed to come as a surprise to him. He said in a brief statement: “Got some news today. Just wanted to say thanks for the fans who’ve supported me for 19 years. It was not my decision to leave the band – but no grudges held. I wish them all the best. Best of luck and happy travels to them.”

A GOO GOO DOLLS comment followed, explaining: “It is true Mike is no longer with the band, but we wish him the best in his new journey, and hope that fans and friends will take a minute to consider this decision was not taken lightly by anyone involved.

“Things happen personally and professionally that drive difficult decisions like this. But rest assured we are looking forward to continuing our 28-year journey.”

Last night Malinin tweeted “Hey @TheRealSambora, do you want to start a band with me?”

Malinin replaced original drummer George Tutuska in 1995. The current lineup includes co-founders John Rzeznik and Robby Takac plus Brad Fernquist and Korel Tunador. 

THE GOO GOO DOLLS released their tenth studio album, Magnetic, in June.
