The band will launch the venue’s $100m new incarnation with a six-night residency later this month, and that’s inspired the creation of the record-breaking replica record.
The construction is 407ft in diameter and contains more than 250,000 square feet of vinyl, weighing 25 tons and rotating at 17 miles per hour. Although it doesn’t carry musical information for playback, it’s visible to the 1700 planes landing daily at Los Angeles International Airport and can be clearly seen from more than a mile above the Forum.
In the UK 2013 was another record year for vinyl sales, with album purchases in the classic format up by 101% on the 2012 total to more than 780,000. It’s the highest figure since 1997, when 817,000 discs were sold. Both seven and twelve-inch singles also put on sales with 34% and 60% increases respectively.
