Watch BOB DYLAN’s New Video for ‘The Night We Called It a Day’
03 March 2015It’s no surprise that 'The Night We Called It a Day,' the first video from Bob Dylan‘s latest album looks a lot like an old-school Hollywood movie. The LP, Shadows in the Night, is the singer-songwriter’s take on Great American Songbook standards from the era.
The black-and-white clip, which you can watch above, even features a ’40s-like title screen. Dylan himself appears throughout the video, at first just seemingly walking through the story that unfolds over the song’s three and a half minutes. But he eventually takes a bigger role.
There he is on the street sucking his teeth at the start. There he is watching a stripper, who winks at him from the stage. There he is tossing down a shot and showing off an engagement ring to actor Robert Davi, who appeared in the first Die Hard movie (as well as the James Bond film Licence to Kill and The Goonies in the ’80s). There he is pointing a gun at Davi. And there he is in the video’s climax, bringing the clip to a bloody close.
The noir tone fits the song, which was published in 1941 and, like all the other songs on Shadows in the Night, sung by Frank Sinatra sometime during his long career. (Incidentally, Davi, a jazz singer, made his film debut in 1977′s Contract on Cherry Street, which starred Sinatra.)
The video was directed by Nash Edgerton, who previously filmed Dylan’s videos for 2009′s 'Beyond Here Lies Nothin’' and 2012′s 'Duquesne Whistle,' both of which take some violent turns of their own.
