A lock of John Lennon's hair has been auctioned for $35,000.

A German hairdresser kept a four-inch piece of the Beatle's hair before the star began filming the 1967 movie, How I Won The War.

It was purchased by UK collector Paul Fraser at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas.

Heritage Auctions director Gary Shrum tells the BBC: "This is the largest lock of John Lennon's hair ever offered at auction and this world record price is a lasting testament to the world's more than 50-year love affair and fascination with Lennon and the Beatles."

Other BEATLES items sold at the auction include a signed head-and-shoulders 'before shot' portrait of Lennon, taken prior to the haircut, which sold for $2125. A photograph of the band signed by all of the Fab Four went for $42,500, while an unused ticket for the band's first US concert in Washington DC in 1964 sold for $30,000.

The biggest seller was a rare sealed copy of the Liverpool outfit's US LP Yesterday and Today, which went for $125,000.
