ZAKK WYLDE - 'Book Of Shadows II' (2016)
25 April 2016Zakk's reputation as one raging guitar beast has been solid and forged throughout the years in many decibel. But, as he himself says, sometimes, after a long day of headcrushing in the studio, one needs to sit down on the acoustic or the piano and wind down a bit. Book of Shadows II is like a well deserved sit-down in a comfy armchair with a drink of choice after a nasty day.
The opening Autumn Changes demonstrates beautifully what will happen in the next hour plus - "melancholy" is not precise word for it because behind the slow-paced themes and melodies stands definite optimism - Tough times don't last, tough people do. The World may be into the habit of emptying its bowels over your head once in a while, still you'll keep on going. Tone-wise is quite different from the trade mark Black Label Society sound but philosophy-wise - certainly not.
Speaking of tone, the Hammond organ is definitely pleasant component. Fits wonderfully the mix of electric and acoustic guitars and creates an atmosphere that I find hard to put into words but it most certainly goes well with dimmed lights, strong liquor, and high-end tobacco.
The other splendid moment is the contrast between the calm melodies and typical Zakk energetic soloing. Given that the album is predominantly acoustic in feel, the electric guitar is more like a guest vocalist on the songs. The barely held back aggression is songs like Lay Me Down, Lost Prayer, and Yesterday's Tears, for example, provides certain dynamic to the otherwise homogeneous tempo in the album.
I must admit that during the first couple of listens I was left with the impression of a bit of monotonicity, but having in mind how quickly an hour passes while Book of Shadows II is playing, and also that I seem to have remembered half of the melodies straight away, I can safely say that it is I who is at fault. The album is clearly captivating even if not at any time of day.
But come the evening Book of Shadows II is great choice for relax and preparation for whatever tomorrow has in store.
