Two Members of TOWER OF POWER Hit by Train
17 January 2017Original TOWER OF POWER drummer David Garibaldi and stand-in bassist Marc Van Wageningen were struck by a train in California last week.
Both men are receiving hospital treatment after the incident in Oakland, which took place near the venue the group was scheduled to play last night. Van Wageningen was said to have undergone surgery, while both are thought to have sustained internal injuries. The show was canceled.
Confirming that Garibaldi and Van Wageningen were hit by an Amtrak vehicle on the Capitol Corridor route, a spokesman for the company said that the pair was “not on a designated crosswalk” when it happened.
TOWER OF POWER spokesman Jeremy Westby said in a statement, which was posted on the band’s Facebook page, that:“both men are responsive and being treated at a local hospital in Oakland.”
Hal Campos, general manager of Yoshi’s venue, where the band was to play, reported that the victims had been thrown some distance from the train. He told KTVU, “When I got to them they were on opposite sides of the train. Their arms and legs were twisted and they were unconscious.”
The R&B-based outfit was formed in Oakland in 1968 as the Motowns. More than 60 musicians have passed through the lineup since then. Their most recent studio album was 2009’s The Great American Soulbook, which was followed by 40th Anniversary Live two years later.
