Earlier tonight, at the 49th annual Grammy Awards at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, Slayer was awarded a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" for the song "Eyes of the Insane" off their latest album "Christ Illusion".
The other nominees in the "Best Metal Performance" category were Lamb of God for "Redneck", Mastodon for "Colony of Birchmen", Ministry for "Lies, Lies, Lies" and Stone Sour for "30/30-150".

Australia's Wolfmother was honored with a Grammy in the "Best Hard Rock Performance" (in a "battle" with Buckcherry, Nine Inch Nails, Tool and System of a Down), and Tool's guitarist Adam Jones received his first solo Grammy for "Best Recording Package", thanks to his work as art director for the band's latest album, "10,000 Days".

As expected, The Red Hot Chili Peppers won plenty of Grammys (four, to be more precise) - for "Best Rock Song" and "Best Rock Performance" for "Dani California", as well as for "Best Rock Album" and "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package" for "Stadium Arcadium".

Rick Rubin became "Producer of the Year", while guitarist Peter Frampton won the "Best Pop Instrumental Album" Grammy for "Fingerprints", which features members of The Rolling Stones and Pearl Jam.

The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Joan Baez, Maria Callas, Booker T. & The MG's and Ornette Coleman won lifetime achievement awards, and the ceremony itself was opened by the reunited The Police, who performed their breakthrough hit "Roxanne".
