In Memory Of... The Fratellis

Rock 'n' roll has lost yet another band as Scottish pop rock trio The Fratellis announced Thursday (April 22) they are splitting up.

According to two posts on the band's message board, both vocalist Jon Lawler and bassist Barry Wallace announced they had no plans to record or tour in the future and laid the band to rest.

The Fratellis formed in Glasgow, Scotland around 2005, and Lawler, Wallace and Gordon McRory — who dubbed themselves Jon Fratelli, Barry Fratelli and Mince Fratelli, respectively — released their debut self-titled EP in early 2006 and were declared by NME that summer as Britain's best new band.

The Fratellis (named after the crime family in The Goonies) released Costello Music in the U.K. later in 2006. The album, which made several year-end best-of lists around the world for its rowdy, party-starting rockers and singalong choruses, had four singles in the British Top 40: 'Chelsea Dagger' (the song the Chicago Blackhawks play after every goal scored at home), "Whistle For The Choir," "Baby Fratelli" and "Henrietta."

Cashing in on the success (including a 2007 BRIT Award for best breakthrough act) and touring North America as well as the European summer festival circuit, The Fratellis released a live DVD entitled Edge In Brixton in 2007.

But the spontaneity and verve found on the first album was hard to resurrect on sophomore effort Here We Stand. The group self-produced the 2008 record and toured with two additional members in Will Foster (keyboards) and Robin Peringer (guitar). Here We Stand featured the singles "Look Out Sunshine!" and "Mistress Mabel" and was later reissued in a deluxe version with a bonus DVD.

Although there was speculation The Fratellis would be putting out two albums in 2009, Lawler quashed that idea. A few one-off shows followed last summer before the group in effect went on hiatus.
