For many, the French indie outfit Phoenix is known simply for '1901' and 'Litzomania', the two singles turned television commercial soundtracks from the masterful 2009 album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix'.

But as any fan will tell you, the Thomas Mars-led quartet has a healthy rГ©sumГ© beyond the aforementioned hits, complete with three full-length studio albums and a live show that rivals most. Soon enough, compliments of film director Sophia Coppola, Phoenix will also be able to add a film score to that list.

As you may or may not know, Mars is Coppola’s life-partner and the father of their child Romy. Last December, we reported on Mars’ plans to pen songs for the new Coppola-directed film Somewhere. Since then, those plans have expanded a bit — now, the project is a full band effort which will see Phoenix scoring the film.

Speaking recently with MTV (via The Playlist), guitarist Christian Mazzalai explained that the film’s music will be centered around Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’s seven-minute epic 'Love Like a Sunset'.

“She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” explained Mazzalai.

“And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.”
“This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture
,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added.
