Flamenco Gibraltarian weirdos they might be, but Breed 77 is also a band that means more than a sum of its parts. In this very album, “Un Encuentro”, they cunningly put some 11 songs, all previously released, but this time sung in Spanish. Another shameless attempt to empty our pockets, I hear you say, but wait a second, it’s way more fun now. Why didn’t they do that back then?
But who cares? Right here and right now these guys rock, or... er-r-r, dance. Nobody can be absolutely sure about terms he/she uses when it comes to this bilingual Latino rock’n’roll melting pot that boils spontaneously into something so twisted that it could be compared to very few other bands.
Talking about bands, it’s hard to believe that Breed 77 will breed an army of devoted followers. Despite the greatness of the idea, their approach is doomed - not only because of the band’s British origin, but also because people in general moved away from that stylistics in the late 90’s. Yep, it was super-duper cool back then to mix every possible form of music with Latino shit or hip-hop, but now there’s a tendency to reincarnate the purist metal values. The question is not whether this is right or wrong, it’s just the time we’re living in, and Breed 77 seem like they are not quite fitting in.
