This time Darkest Hour, once known as the Washington D.C. metalcore heroes, pushed the limits of the genre so further down the line that it simply seems improper to call them otherwise than just… metal.
“Deliver Us” slays, my friends! Its uncompromising thrashing velocity, stricken by the incredibly furious rhythm section and multilayered guitar mayhem, is almost incomprehensible by human senses, but still as menacing as the sound of hundreds of bombs falling over the city.
While their last attempt “Undoing Ruin” and the already considered classic “Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation” (2003) were criticizing the American government’s political weakness and hypocrisy, “Deliver Us” is slowly moving away from the political theme towards more fantasy, if not fantastic issues like the ones exploited in “A Paradox with Flies”, “Tunguska” and “Fire in the Sky”. Not very down to earth hardcore, isn’t it?
More news; Darkest Hour, like many other similar bands, have improved their sound to memorable solos, lavishly spread over the basic thrash machine. The only hardcore left you can find in this band is in their approach and attitude. First, they still record for Victory Records, and second, they manage to continue the DIY tradition they inherited from the old days.
Now, with “Deliver Us” seeing the light of day, only the hope remains that after a dozen shows in Germany, Darkest Hour will finally be able to bring their nightmarish metal to some more Eastern parts of Europe.
