There leaders and there are followers. There are also bands that always stay in the background, but somehow manage to change trends and perceptions. And while the world’s rock press was too busy proclaiming and discussing every single detail of Green Day’s “American Idiot” as if it was the first concept album since Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”, Boys Night Out released “Trainwreck” - a story about alcoholic problems, degradation and suffering which can lead a man to mass murder. No media seemed to give a shit though... Amazingly, Boys Night Out not only had delivered a great punk concept, but also had overcome the limits of the genre and were ultimately heading to separate themselves from the pack. One more time they influenced the underground world so massively that we can see now how ex-emo bands like My Chemical Romance are practically implementing the concept formula. Many do. With such heritage on your back, it’s a tough job to overtop your previous album, yet Boys Night Out took the challenge. Their new effort is infectious and hard-hitting. No concepts this time, just plain and catchy rock music played the way it has to be in 2007. Many people won’t like this record, especially if they were waiting for another dramatic release, but it’s not Boys Night Out’s fault. It’s just the expectations of some people. My advice would be to go ahead and give this CD a chance. It might not be an intellectual fairy tale, but certainly will become the crowd’s favorite when played live. Of course, there are flaws in this album, which most probably won’t let it be the band’s biggest one until now. First, it’s the repetitive guitar lines and second, the too memorable melodic punk clichés. Overall it’s a decent album worth listening more than once. Try it.
