It’s too easy to label Himsa as just another metalcore act and consign them to the scrapheap of history, but there is something in this band. Maybe they put it in the water out there in Seattle, maybe it’s just the natural talent, who knows…
Whatever it is, Himsa do have it. They build their way with each and every album. And while the latest one, “Hail Horror”, was darker and blurrier than the most horrific concrete jungle you can imagine, the new one, “Summon in Thunder”, seems more experimental, but not less gloomier at all. Combining melody and aggression into one epic formula that looks forward to destroy your senses once and forever, this is an album that nails it all in a spectacular fashion. It takes several listenings to fully comprehend the message Himsa are trying to deliver, but once you get it, they own you.
Put all the metal aside, and you will find amazing details while dissecting “Summon in Thunder”. First and the most important finding is that this masterpiece is very progressive in some parts (“Skinwalkers”, “Den of Ifamy”), and at the same time it’s rather gloomy and hard. If you’re looking for anthemic choruses, you have definitely come to the wrong place. All 11 pieces are connected with each other, so you have to look at it as an entity. On the other hand, there’s filler stuff here and there in some songs and Himsa could have cut it a little bit before releasing it. Otherwise it sounds like an omen of great Himsa releases to come. Let’s see.
