Although still arguably best known for their activities in other bands or solo projects, these four gentlemen have formed one of the most consistent supergroups recently and put a high class rock album. Not a thing that happens very often these days, er? Chickenfoot featuring two ex- Van Halens (Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony), one Red Hot Chili Pepper (the drummer Chad Smith and the obligatory in such cases flash guitar player started off a few years ago with accidental jams held at Hagar’s owned Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico but then suddenly Michael and Sammy were cut loose and Chad was free because of RHCP’s year’s off. Then Satriani would never miss the opportunity to collaborate, wouldn’t he? Recorded last year, this self-titled album is some sort of display of the abundance of talent of these four people but in the same it’s a straight (and sometimes a little bit framed) and unsurprising rock affair. The fascinating thing about it is that they don’t release many good rock albums nowadays. Having in mind that Satriani can do almost everything with guitar and Hagar is able to burst a blood vessel or two with his real down to earth performance and songwriting, you can get the picture yourself. Ah, yeah, Chad is simply amazing beating up the way he would never be allowed in RCHP. If you need to put a tag of what Chickenfoot is all about, there’s a song for that purpose and it’s 'Sexy Little Thing'. 'Soap On the Rope' is… let’s say expectable although energetic and edgy. You can’t really tell that a bad- ass rock’n’roll song like Running Out should carry environmental lyrics, but, hey, it’s obviously 2009 now and nothing is what it used to be. Framed I said before and framed this album is to certain extent. There are certain stumbles like the power ballad 'Learning To Fall', the ordinary 'Get It Up' and the somewhat semi-bleak finale 'The Future Is The Past'. While the album itself is an adventurous journey, these are the points where you can’t help but think to yourself that may be some of these guys, no matter how good, are on the edge of a creative bankruptcy. On the other hand it’s one off and Chickenfoot obviously take no prisoners and accept nothing for granted. Just rock the fuck out. The rest is history.
