The dubstep fashion in metal has an official reason now and it’s called вЂThe Path Of Totality’. Of course there were elements of this South London born dance sub-genre incorporated in the music of new generation metal bands Periphery, Asking Alexandria and even Bring Me The Horizon, but what we see now is its вЂoverground’ popularity outburst ready to unleash a completely new trend.
There’s nothing new in the way things happen. It’s never been a secret that metal survived only because of its adaptivity to other musical forms- pop, funk, punk, reggae, hip-hop, rap, industrial, techno, hardcore and what not, you name it. Korn is a perfect example. In 1994 they turned the extreme music upside-down and ever since they never stopped trying to achieve the same effect but from a different angle.
However, this collaboration has a centre point and it’s the hottest dubstep name at the moment SkrilleС… with whom Korn executed the best tracks on the album вЂChaos Lives in Everything’, вЂNarcissistic Cannibal’, вЂGet Up’. Skrillex is actually one guy also known as Sonny Moore. He has never made it as a frontman of a generic metalcore band and decided to reinvent his own abilities as a DJ. Among other dubstep artists who collaborated on this album are Noisia, 12th Planet and Kill The Noise.
вЂThe Path Of Totality’ has nothing to do with the 90’s experimental Fear Factory re-mixes, nor it has something in common with NIN. Dubstep is not industial. It’s not drum’n’bass. It’s not techno. Its tempo is easy going around 140 BPM and it’s an easy structure to build a song on it and that’s exactly what Korn do, because these 13 tracks are not just re-mixes and scattered left-over ideas bound with electronica.
At least half of the material on the CD has a massive potential and the other half, with all its minor faults is far from mediocre.
Only time will tell whether Korn will change the extreme music once again or not but if you like your tunes refreshing and out of the box, this will easily become your daily soundtrack for a while.
