If you are bored with the heat or metal, or maybe with both, then the new album by Autumn Tears may be one of the solutions to getting rid of them. There is only one problem - it is not only that “The Hallowing” is not metal, but it is also hard to be qualified. “Neo-classical” does not sound quite right for me about the content of the CD, although it is the most used definition in the information about the band.
Many people claim that “Eclipse” (2004) is the best effort in Autumn Tears’ carrier, but the new songs are quite good, too. The variety in this music is almost missing, however it is still ethereal and slick. The choral performances prevail. They are sung well by Laurie Ann Haus, but for 40 minutes they do not undergo changes and become boring quite fast.
As I already said, this music is not metal, but although not heavy, it can’t be used as a cold breeze in the hot July days, because it is too complex. The messages of these original compositions are tough for assimilation. Played by oboe, cello, contrabass and other classical instruments, the melodies make a minor and depressive atmosphere in an interesting way, with new means of expression, but the main impression from the album exploits themes already known.
Otherwise, “The Hallowing” is a typical Autumn Tears album - full of musicianship and refined, yet stodgy. With this kind of records it will be difficult for them to go on big stages and become popular... but the band does not search any of these things. This does not mean you can’t give them a chance. Their music may become suitable for relaxation from the kilos of new metal CDs... or the heat.
